SETTING
The lower floor of a single family row house - the family spaces
Spaces that had been previously renovated into an open plan
But a poorly placed closet constricts the dining room, squeezing its functions into a corner adjacent to the bathroom
yet still not providing adequate storage for the family's needs
PLOT
The closet is removed and the room inflates to its entire rectangular space.
Two full-height walls of deep storage cabinets are added, as well as a banquette and large dining table, creating plenty of closed storage while keeping the space open and uncluttered.
THE EXISTING PLAN
The dining room is called upon to serve as the hub for movement for the house, connecting the other living spaces to the entry and the bathroom, while providing ample space for the family to dine, work, and entertain.
The existing room was chopped up by a closet monopolizing one corner, making the space cluttered, crowded and almost unusable.
THE NEW DINING ROOM
The closet is removed and replaced by two full-height walls of deep cabinets.
One cabinet wall buffers the entry to the bathroom and provides space for a small bar.
The other wall creates a built-in dining area with loads of space for the family to eat and study.
The existing dark stained floors are stripped and returned to a natural maple. New warm paint colours, as well as new lighting, doors and hardware complete the transformation.
THE BATHROOM AND BAR WALL CABINETS
The clean white wall of new custom cabinets provides hanging storage for coats and drawers for other seasonal accessories.
Less frequently accessed items are stored in the deep upper cabinets that fill the space about the bathroom door, creating a niche around the door to separate it further from the room.
Rich navy blue cabinets define the small bar space, topped by a figured quartzite counter. Bottle storage is provided in a lower pull out and upper cabinets.
the existing space
THE KITCHEN
Although the kitchen was not renovated in this project, the countertops were changed to match the new quartzine bar, accented by a navy tile backsplash and new pendant lighting, bringing the space into the new design theme.
WORKING WITH THE EXISTING SPACE
Except for removing the existing closet, no other parts of the existing architecture were altered. The existing small wall opening between the dining and kitchen was maintained and infilled with a shallow cabinet for additional bottle storage, finished with frosted glass panels on both sides to let the light pass through.
THE DINING WALL CABINETS
The wall of cabinets at the bathroom is mirrored on the other side of the room, here with a corner cut out to form a custom banquette for dining.
The storage wraps the banquet both above and continuing below the seat, adding extra outlets for charging devices while studying.
A semi-custom table finishes off the dining area, with room for eight.
New recessed lighting highlights the table and beautiful graphic wallpaper behind the banquet.

THE GRAPHIC WALLPAPER
The graphic for the vinyl wallpaper was selected by the owners from Metro Wallcovering's Digital Print Collection and was sized and printed to fit the banquet space.
THE COLOUR PALETTE
A palette of colours was developed that satisfies the owners' tastes while coordinating with the existing finishes that were not being changed.
THE DINING TABLE
The semi-custom table was built using a prefabricated solid maple top and prefabricated tee-shaped steel legs that allow for easy seating access at the banquette.

THE FAMILY ROOM
The existing double in-swing doors took up a lot of space in the room. They were removed and replaced with track mounted sliding doors installed on the inside of the doorway. All elements were stock items, put together to deliver a custom solution specific to this home.
