SETTING
A single family row house with an open plan
A cramped kitchen cut off from the rest of the space, with room for one cook at a time
A family that enjoys the freedom of their open home and doing things together
PLOT
The space is reconfigured to provide an open spacious kitchen that does not compromise storage
The new kitchen becomes an extension of the dining room, providing opportunity for many cooks in the kitchen.
THE EXISTING PLAN
The existing "U" shaped kitchen has a very tight plan and little place to work.
The worn birch veneer cabinets do not match the aesthetic of the homeowners.
THE NEW KITCHEN
The plan is changed to an open "L" with a small free-standing island. A storage wall is stretched into the adjacent dining room to increase the kitchen's footprint and allow the spaces to flow together.
A combination of clean white shaker cabinets and open wood shelving is complemented by butcher-block counters and modern black hardware.
The cabinets are pre-manufactured units from IKEA while the shelves and island are custom made.
To address the homeowner's dislike that the front door allowed an immediate view of the entire home, a custom frosted glass and wood partition is added at the entry to visually shield the view and provide a vestibule space to prepare for entering and exiting.
THE ISLAND
The custom free-standing maple wood island has a butcher-block top and open storage below. The panel at the side of the unit folds up to offer additional counterspace.
THE FINISHING DETAILS
The floating maple shelves display favorite serving pieces and are accented by a whimsical floral wallpaper in green tones that complement the homeowner's colour palette.
THE COLOUR PALETTE
A palette of colours was developed that satisfies the owners' tastes while coordinating with the existing finishes that were not being changed.
THE SCREEN PARTITION
A low wall is extended from the existing closet partition to anchor a custom maple and frosted glass partition that obscures the view to the interior beyond. The vestibule side of the partition provides hooks for coats and bags.
