SETTING
The upper floor bedrooms of a single family row house
A floorplan that had been previously renovated into two large bedrooms, restricted by strangely configured closets
A family with two children that are ready to each have their own room
PLOT
With minimal demolition, the existing master bedroom is reconfigured to allow room for a third bedroom, while the new master receives custom touches to incorporate the couple's personal style.
THE EXISTING PLAN
The existing bedrooms suffer from awkwardly located closets that cut up the rooms and make poor use of the large spaces.
Space for the new room is found by removing the closet partitions and making minimal openings in the existing structural wall. The existing bathroom remains untouched, to be part of a future project.
THE NEW PLAN
The storage needs of each family member are assessed, and a plan for three highly efficient bedrooms is developed.
The new compact master walk-in closet uses prefabricated cabinet elements to hold the same amount of items in half the floor space of the previous closet.
THE MASTER BEDROOM
The headwall receives a panelized treatment that conceals the door to the existing linen closet. New wall mounted reading lamps complete the look.
The new walk‑in closet uses prefabricated cabinet elements by IKEA. It is finished with with rail mounted custom wood sliding doors, adding warmth and visual interest.
