SETTING
A small odd-shaped room
Once adequate as a nursery,
no longer serves the needs of a growing girl
A girl wanting a space that is uniquely hers
that will see her through the teen years
PLOT
A new room emerges through simply changing the paint and furnishings.
The narrow plan is opened up and badly needed storage is discreetly tucked into every corner.
THE EXISTING PLAN
The small, narrow room was crowded with furniture and overflowing with items needing to be stored, making it difficult to find a place to "be".
Finding a place for a new bed was a challenge, as the plan was too confined to fit a standard twin frame across its width.
THE NEW ROOM
Le placement of furniture is reconsidered to maximize the open space in the narrow plan.
The heater is relocated and, with just enough room for a standard mattress, a custom platform bed is devised to fit under the window.
A simple custom platform is built upon prefabricated kitchen cabinets to offer deep under-bed drawers for extra storage.
The freed space in the middle of the room creates a place for study and art projects.
FINDING THE RIGHT COLOURS
A colour palette is devised that expresses the girl's character and tastes, which guides the selection of the finishes and furnishings.
DRESSING AND ADDITIONAL STORAGE
A dressing area is created on the far wall by way of a tall closed wardrobe with drawers within and an open frame shelving unit with additional drawers and room for toys and books.
FINISHING TOUCHES
A magnetic and cork wall panel hangs across from the desk, created from
prefabricated pieces arranged in a custom layout.
PUTTING THE PACKAGE TOGETHER FOR DIY
All of the selected furnishings are specified with details spelled out for the client to easily order. The layout, phasing of work and construction of the platform is simply stated in step by step instructions for the client to do themselves.
